National pet month is an observation coordinated by the National Office Of Animal Health, who work with animal welfare charities, pet businesses and pet lovers across the UK. Their big mission is to promote responsible pet ownership all year round.

National Pet Month 2021: What's the theme?

This year the theme is Pets and People: Caring For Each Other.

The past year has been a challenging one for all and I'm sure we can agree that our animal companions helped us through some of the turmoil. From encouraging us to get out on our daily walk when we didn't feel like it - to snuggling up on our laps on dreary work-from-home-days, they really made the whole experience a little more bearable.

Make sure this month you remember to reciprocate the love that they have given to you. Whether that's an extra treat every other day or a loving scratch behind the ears, the idea is to share as much Paw-sitivity as possible.

You can also do this by remembering and encouraging the 5 National Pet Month aims and objectives:

  • Promote the benefits of pet ownership
  • Make people aware of the benefits of pets for people and people for pets
  • Increase public awareness of services available from professionals who work with animals
  • Raise awareness of the value of working and assistance companion animals
  • Encourage Fundraising for UK pet welfare charities and organisations.

How can you get involved?

From April 1 to May 3, we would like you to get involved in spreading the awareness of responsible pet ownership.

We want to celebrate National Pet Month with all the best furry, feathery or scale-y friends across the Highlands!

By heading to our social media feeds (Twitter and Facebook) you can tag us in your best snaps and funniest videos of your favourite companion.

Keep an eye out

Over the duration of National Pet Month we plan to have multiple stories focusing on responsible pet ownership.

This will include features such as, a list of animal rescue centres and shelters across the Highlands, a photo gallery of your pet portraits and even asking our staff members to share their pet photos so you can get to know the team and their wee pals.
