School coordinator, Jolene Young, confirmed DYW Moray helps young people prepare for the workforce by collaborating with businesses, schools, and community partners to provide a range of programs and opportunities to help them build skills, gain experience, and explore career pathways.

She said: “We are incredibly grateful for Gary’s commitment to providing young people with opportunities to explore and develop careers in photography.

“His passion and dedication are an inspiration to both the young people he mentors and the wider community.”

Following a career in mental health care, Gary moved into management, training and communications. However, following his passion, he started his photography business in 2010. He offers commercial and individual services, as well as training options.

The recognition from DYW celebrates his contributions to career development through his courses and ongoing support of their initiatives.

Over the past year, Gary has led workshops including photography programs for beginners, where young people aged 14-24 gained hands-on experience and industry insights. Participants were equipped with technical skills and career advice via the #MyAdvicetoYou campaign.

Gary has also been involved with DYW Moray’s career fairs across secondary and primary schools, inspiring students and sharing his expertise about career opportunities.

Jolene added: “His consistent dedication to supporting the local community and empowering young talent makes him an exemplary model of how a small, local business can make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people.”

Gary is grateful for the recognition and looking forward to helping more people get off to a good start in photography.

He said: “I’m delighted to have received the certificate. It’s always been a pleasure to assist and support young people through DYW Moray, and I have great respect and value for the services they provide.

“I get support from DYW when I need it, and there are always great rewards and learning opportunities to be gained from working with the young people.”

Gary is excited to announce a new, free course beginning on March 1, specifically for aspiring photographers aged 12-15. The fully funded project, running over five Saturdays, offers an opportunity for young people to develop their skills. The course will explore how photography can be used to evoke positive emotions and connect with viewers through powerful imagery.
