Culbin Forest fire near Forres burning for more than 24 hours





Emergency service crews are still battling a forest fire that has now been burning for more than 24 hours.

Firefighters remain at the scene near Hill 99 in Culbin Forest six miles from Forres, attempting to ensure the blaze remains under control.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson confirmed, at its height, more than 25 firefighters, fire appliances and specialist resources including a large water bowser and helicopter were mobilised after the alarm was raised at 8.37am on Monday, May 19.

It is understood that a fire nearby had been put out on Sunday.

He said: “Four fire appliances remain at the scene this morning to tackle remaining hotspots following the wildfire.

“Crews worked tirelessly to extinguish a wildfire measuring approximately 800 x 500 metres affecting an area of grass and gorse.”

The smoke can be smelled this morning in Forres.

The spokesperson added: “As a precaution, the public is asked to avoid the area and those who live nearby are advised to close windows and doors due to the smoke in the vicinity.”
