Moray Council has informed Police Scotland of a travellers encampment at Plasmon Playing Fields, Forres

Travellers have set up an illegal encampment on school playing fields near a residential area.

Moray Council was made aware of the group’s arrival at the site of the former Plasmon Mill between Macdonald Drive and Burdsyard Road behind Forres Academy a fortnight ago.

A local authority spokesperson said: “Police Scotland notified us of the encampment at Plasmon Playing Field on Thursday, June 5 at 2.30pm.

“Since then, our officers have been regularly attending the site to engage with those present and offer advice in line with our established protocols.”

The local authority makes decisions on management of such sites; making an initial assessment of the occupiers needs and informing relevant agencies such as education and health; considering safety and security; communicating with those living on the site and the settled community around it; then considering legal action to reclaim the land.

The travellers at Plasmon initially indicated they would remain on the field for only a few days, however, the stay has extended into several weeks.

The council spokesperson added: “As a result, a multi-agency case conference is being convened to consider next steps. This will include consideration of legal action to secure their removal from the site.”

The Police are expected to ensure that public order and wider community safety issues are addressed while working with local authorities and other agencies to meet the needs of all communities.

A police spokesperson said: “Although police have been made aware, it’s a matter for the local authority. There isn’t a crime report.”
