Council gives some early festive cheer
MORAY Council has handed out an early Christmas present after members decided to freeze council tax for the fifth year in a row.
The decision to peg next year’s council tax bill was made at a meeting of the council held on Tuesday, with councillors giving unanimous approval.
The move came as the full council was given details of its financial settlement from the Scottish Government for 2012-13.
Normally the council tax level is set as part of the council’s annual budget considerations in February.
Hwever, Councillor Allan Wright, chairman of the policy and resources committee, said that the review of next year’s revenue budget was already at an advanced stage.
"I am sure it will bring a measure of Christmas cheer to the people of Moray," he said.
The proposal will see Band D properties pegged at the current level of £1135.
The news was welcomed by SNP councillors. Opposition Leader, Cllr Pearl Paul said that this was in line with the SNP policy to freeze council tax.
" The SNP recognises the financial pressures facing families, who are being hit with pay freezes and soaring bills. Council Tax is one area that we can make a difference to people and today’s announcement will provide at least one degree of certainty for household budgets for the coming year."
