Moray cocaine driver on the A941 Dufftown to Craigellachie road had to be cut of of his car

A Moray man was high on cocaine when his car left the road and rolled into a field.

At about 9.20pm on December 12, 2023, the emergency services received a call that a Ford Fiesta had crashed off the A941 Dufftown to Craigellachie road.

Gary Wilson, the driver, was cut out of the badly damaged vehicle and taken for treatment to Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin.

A blood sample taken from him subsequently found benzoylecgonine – a primary ingredient of cocaine – in his system.

This was 415mg per litre of blood – more than eight times the level of 50mg at which the law states the drug affects the ability to drive safely.

Elgin Sheriff Court heard that Wilson, who’s from Hillside Avenue, Dufftown, had previously been banned from driving.

Defence solicitor Matthew O’Neill stated his 51-year-old client, who walked into the courtroom with the aid of a crutch, was still suffering from the effects of this crash as well as another.

These injuries, the lawyer added, rendered Wilson incapable of carrying out any unpaid work for the community.

Mr O’Neill said: “There are days when he’s simply unable to get himself out of his house.”

Sheriff David Harvie banned Wilson from the roads for 18 months.

In addition, he placed the defendant under the supervision of the social work department for the next 14 months.
