A CROWDFUNDER to raise money towards fixing a local church roof has received no support since it was launched three weeks ago.

The Forres St Leonard's Church Roof Appeal aims to raise £10,000 of the total £28,000 required to mend holes in the B-listed, Gothic building, formerly Forres High United Free Church, that has stood at 43 High Street since 1903.

St Leonard's session clerk, Roy Anderson, confirmed Church of Scotland General Trustees have already contributed £10,000 and Day of Giving another £8000.

He said: "We applied to the Baird Trust, the Budge Trust and the Ferguson Bequest for support but got no joy I’m afraid due to pressure of funds.

"If we don't raise money the remainig required £10,000, we’ll just have to raid our reserves which we do not really want to touch."

An increasing number of events including concerts are being held at St Leonard's, which has an attached hall and kitchen extension.

Around 18 organisations use the facilities every week.

The church transepts have been opened up by removing pews to create open spaces and there are plans to start a new praise group and community initiatives.

Unfortunately, leaks from the roof whenever there's heavy rain have badly affected walls and carpetting, and parts of the grounds have been cordon off due to loose masonry.
