YOUNGSTERS from an activity-based social club enjoyed a jam-packed summer holiday.

The Wednesday Night Group (WNG), for school-aged children and led by Lesley Mawhinney, was based at its regular venue in The Hub at Forres Academy but went on a number of excursions.

Lesley said: "We were out and about in the local area. We spent one morning at Pinz bowling alley in Elgin, where we used the Osprey Trust bus for transport and Kevin Skivington as our volunteer driver.

"The children and parents enjoyed the bowling which was made possible by generous donations from the community.

"We also put some of our new outdoor play equipment to the test on a sunny day and enjoyed swingball, rounders and football at Roysvale playing field. We had a picnic afterwards."

WNG also visited Forres Police Station.

"PC Kevin Skivington and administrator Nicola McLean made us very welcome," said Lesley. "The group was shown around the cells, got fingerprints and mugshots taken, tried on handcuffs and got to sit in the police van!"

A WNG Great Summer Bake Off event saw the youngsters divided into two teams and competing before going home with bags full of home bakes.

"Our final meeting was a Pirates and Princesses Day," said Lesley. "Dressing up was optional but attendees got the chance to be tattooed like a pirate or pampered like a princess by some of our talented 4th year pupils who have since signed up to become volunteers."

Peer mentor Emma Robertson brought along friends Kaycee Pinder and Rona Clark to help out, joining in a treasure trail from which participants took pieces of eight home to enjoy.

Lesley is looking forward to the fun carrying on over the winter months.

She said: "Active Schools co-ordinators Rosalyn Carruthers and Paul Rogan are going to provide regular healthy activities. In between partying hard at Halloween and Christmas we’ll be getting involved in arts and crafts, a Chinese/Thai theme night and healthy living cooking,

"We’re also welcoming Cerys Watt as an extra volunteer."

WNG meets at Forres Academy Hub during term time on alternative Wednesdays from 6-7.30pm. Call Lesley on 07860219443 to get involved.
