MORAY Council is investigating solutions and costs as it aims to deal with a flooding issue at Clovenside Cemetery in Forres.

Clovenside Cemetery, located behind Forbeshill, is prone to flooding, with many graves having been left underwater during floods in recent months.

Water tends to pond at the deepest point of the graveyard when rain is heavy.

Bad flooding in October highlighted the issue, with dozens of graves left under a large body of water.

The council has carried out a site inspection and a test dig as it aims to find solutions to this problem.

A spokesperson for Moray Council said: “We appreciate the distress caused to families by the flooding issues at Clovenside Cemetery.

"We have recently – sensitively – carried out a test dig to assess the ground conditions. We are now investigating potential solutions and the related costs.”

Councillor Aaron McLean (Forres, SNP) added: "We will wait to see what options come forward once the exploratory work is done on the existing soak-away.

"This is obviously causing some distress for families with loved ones buried in the cemetery, but I remain hopeful that a solution can be found that is acceptable to them."

At the moment, there is no time scale for a solution to the problem being found.
