A HISTORIC local building hosted a ceilidh for its first community event since it was renovated.

Around 50 revellers attended The Clubroom on Altyre Estate - next to Glasgow School of Art’s Creative Campus - organised by new events coordinator, Lindsay Gale.

She said: “There was much merriment as attendees whirled around the dance floor. Four piece, high energy band Reel Scotch played the night away, with locals Chris Stepian on accordion and Willie James on fiddle alongside Stewart Watson from Portessie on keyboard and Liam Macintosh from Huntly on drums. Light refreshments were served as Charlie Gaskin, Andrea Turner and David Clarke also entertained with their musical talents.”

She added: “Sir Gordon Cumming of Altyre Estate kindly gave us the hall rent free for the first ceilidh. The ticket price just covered the band and food to make the event as affordable as possible.”

The Altyre Estate is family run and has been home to Clan Cumming for 800 years. Blairs Steading, including The Clubroom, dates back to the 1830s. The Steading was built in the Tuscan style and designed by local architect Archibald Simpson after he was inspired by a tour of the Mediterranean.

Sir Cumming has privately renovated The Classroom building. Since its days as a dairy farm it has been used as a cricket pavilion, to host shooting parties and ceilidhs. Renovations include a new staircase, kitchen, wiring, toilets and paintwork. Sir Alistair is adding a new car park and landscaping.

“It’s the perfect venue for community events, celebrations, meetings and workshops,” said Lindsay. “Ceilidhs will be held quarterly.”
