A LOCAL business has hand-delivered 44 free meals to deserving members of the community.

Family firm, The Captain's Table in Findhorn came up with a novel way of rewarding villagers nominated for pizzas by their customers for helping others during the coronavirus lockdown.

Owner Katrina Paterson confirmed a 'buy one-give one' pizza deal was on offer over two nights when a total of 98 deliveries went out.

She said: "I wanted to do something nice for the village so my husband Simon came up with the idea of customers buying a pizza giving one free to someone like NHS workers, carers or someone who might be struggling.

"He just felt that, because of the current situation, everyone needed a little boost ... and it’s always nice to be nice!"

Most customers nominated neighbours who have been helping them get shopping, prescriptions and more.

Findhorn Village Stores owners Richard and Tracey Cross were suggested most frequently.

"They have been helping the elderly with food and newspaper deliveries," said Katrina. "Another very noteworthy nomination was carer Jane Kelso for being so helpful throughout the village."

Katrina's son and champion power-boater, Jamie (16), enjoyed seeing the reactions to his free pizza deliveries (from a safe social distance).

He said: "The best one was from an NHS lady that worked at the health centre. She had just finished a very long shift and was extremely grateful and overwhelmed!"

During lockdown, The Captain's Table has been upgraded with a larger seating area - the marina's shop has been moved to another part of the building. The kitchen has also been moved and upgraded with a new extractor fan and other equipment.

The Patersons are looking forward to letting customers see the improvements for themselves.

"Lockdown has been been very weird," said Katrina. "We miss our customers. On the other hand, we have enjoyed it as we have worked really hard together, doing loads of DIY.

"However, we are hoping we can get back to some kind of normal soon."
