A LOCAL couple celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary were honoured to receive a message from the Queen – 60 years to the day they were married.

Eric and Eleaner Munro were presented with the Lord-Lieutenant’s card –commemorating their six decades together – by Alasdair Laing of Logie Estate, who was representing Moray’s Lord-Lieutenant, Major General Seymour Monro.

Outgoing Moray councillor Claire Feaver (Forres, Conservative) also gave the pair a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the local authority.

Both Eric and Eleaner were overwhelmed with gratitude.

Eric said: “Alasdair and Claire were wonderful.

“Alasdair is such a nice man and, both of us being local, we had a great chat about the old days.”

Cllr Feaver said: “It was wonderful for me that my last official duty as a councillor was to attend such a happy event.

“I’ve only been married for about half that time so it’s good to meet people like Eleaner and Eric to see evidence of how long you can keep things going if you have the right attitude!”

Having met at a Saturday night dance in Forres Drill Hall in 1960, after courting for two years Eric and Eleaner married in Alves Parish Church on April 7, 1962.

Until retiring, Eleaner was the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages in Forres.

Eric was with the Ministry of Defence and served at RAF Kinloss, RAF Lossiemouth, HMS Vulcan, (Thurso), BUTEC, (Kyle of Lochalsh) and HQ 2 Division Edinburgh.

The sweethearts have lived in Forres all of their married lives and have one daughter, Karen, born in 1968, who is a primary school teacher.

And on the secret to a 60-year happy marriage?

Eric answered: “We enjoy playing golf together. Take an interest in your partner and help each other in their work and hobbies.”
