Army Cadets Travis Bremner (15), Niamh Jackson (14) and Aiden Henderson (14) from 1st Battalion The Highlanders’ Forres Detachment, were presented with promotions and an award by Forres commander staff sergeant instructor Leonard Cowieson in front of the other cadets during a ceremony at Forres Drill Hall.

A cadets spokesperson said: “Cdts Bremner and Jackson are role models for the younger cadets of the detachment.

“Travis has been part of the cadets since May 2022 and has worked through his basic army cadet syllabus, completing it last April. He will complete his 1 Star level this month.

“Niamh has been a member of Forres for the same period. She finished her basic at the same time and will also complete her second level of the syllabus this month.”

The pair were presented with promotions to lance corporal, marking the detachment’s first cadet non-commissioned officers since Forres reopened in 2022 following the pandemic. This is the first rank a cadet can receive, reflecting that they have displayed leadership qualities and can be trusted with responsibility of looking after for a small group of cadets in the detachment.

Cdt Aiden Henderson was also presented with his basic army cadet syllabus certificate. Training is split into five levels, covering basic to four star. Each gets more challenging as cadets progress, covering 12 subjects, ranging from shooting and fieldcraft to community engagement and sport.

Forres Detachment meets each Tuesday night at the Drill Hall on High Street from 7-9.15pm.

The group is currently preparing for summer camp, after which it closes for the summer to reopen on August 20.

The spokesperson finished: “The Army Cadets gives young people access to fun, friendship, action and adventure, challenging them to learn more, do more and try more.

“With over 72,000 cadets and 10,000 adults in more than 1,600 locations around the UK, the Army Cadets makes a big impact on young people, adults, parents, and communities.”
