UHI Moray apprentices continue to excel in skills competitions

Electrical apprentices training at UHI Moray have performed successfully at the North Heat of the SECTT apprentice of the year.

In total, 14 apprentices took part in the event, which took place at Linkwood Technology Centre on June 3, from stage 1 and stage 2.

Adam Souter, employed by MacDonald and Munro Ltd, emerged as the Stage 2 winner.

He will now represent the region at the national finals in Edinburgh to compete for the overall SECTT Apprentice of the Year title.

Remarkably, Adam is making a strong comeback after suffering a broken ankle during a Scottish Junior Cup match last September while playing for Forres Thistle.

In Stage 1, Matt Jameison, an apprentice with AES Solar and a footballer for Forres Mechanics who formerly played for Elgin City, also delivered a strong performance.

Three additional apprentices from UHI Moray have also been successful recently in the SNIPEF Plumbing of the Year competition [SPAY 50] which took place on Friday, June 13, at South Lanarkshire College.

Frazer Graham, employed by Moray Council won first place in the Lead Category, Kai Gray, employed by Cowie Plumbing and Heating won second place in the BPEC SkillPLUMB Copper Category and Sweyn Macaskill employed by Moray Council was 3rd in the SNIPEF sheet lead competition.

Jim MacKinnon UHI Moray Deputy Head of Curriculum for Construction, said: “Year on year our apprentices gain awards at various skills competitions and this year looks to be no different.

“We are all very proud of their successes and encourage them to take part in as many competitions as possible.”
