A FORRES ACADEMY student has been commended for his voluntary work.

Cameron Stewart (17) was given the recognition at the Moray Young Citizen Awards, presented by Moray Council’s Head of Schools and Curriculum Development, Vivienne Cross.

Cameron said: "I feel honoured to have been commended as there were a lot of fantastic people at the event. It was amazing to see all the outstanding efforts others have been making in the Moray community."

Moray Council Convener, Councillor Shona Morrison, attended the evening and congratulated all of the finalists.

She said: "When I read through the list of achievements, individually and collectively, carried out by the young people I was blown away.

"Despite their busy lives, young people in Moray are prioritising the needs of their local, national and global communities through inter-generational work, fundraising, resilience building and empowerment. What they are doing is truly transformational for those people whose lives they touch."

Cameron's volunteering at school includes: tutoring a younger pupil twice-a-week; being part of the pupil forum and S6 committee; helping out at a number of school events.

Outside school: he volunteered at Forres Area Soccer Sevens for a season as an assistant coach; he is involved in 446 Forres Squadron Air Training Corps and was awarded the honour of Lord Lieutenant’s cadet for Moray in 2018; and has attended events with Lord-Lieutenant of Moray Grenville Johnston, including touring Moray with Prince Andrew.

Cameron said: "Being a citizen is about spotting all the opportunities around us, having an open mind and being willing to try something that maybe isn’t “cool”.

"This mindset has helped me make the most of every experience that has come my way and develop as a person."
