A broad church in Forres

By Alistair Whitfield

MANDARIN Chinese, Russian and the ancient martial art of Jiu Jitsu – St Leonard's Church is soon to commence offering classes in all three.

Rev Donald Prentice said: "We're taking seriously the Church of Scotland’s directive to engage more actively with the local community rather than wait for people to come through its doors."

The language lessons for beginners in Chinese will start on Wednesday evenings at the end of this month, with Russian being taught on Thursdays.

The classes, which will be conducted with a fluent speaker, are each for a maximum of a dozen people.

Classes in Ju Jitsu are also being lined up for Saturdays in the church hall, which will be led by a leading UK Sensei. There may also be a class for women in self-defence and confidence-building.

St Leonards also has a variety of other projects and activities already on the go throughout the week.

These include a pop-up Mediterranean lunch, which has been hugely successful on Tuesdays, providing a range of tasty and healthy options.

Musical recitals have also been held every Wednesday lunchtime.
