Met Office snow and ice alert issued for Moray, Highlands, Aberdeenshire, Orkney, Shetland, Lewis and Harris

A snow and ice warning has been issued for the Moray and the northern Highlands - with up to 10cm expected to fall in some places.

The Met Office has issued a yellow alert, which comes into force on Sunday at 4pm and will remain in place until 11am on Monday.

The alert covers the entire Moray Firth area, as well as all of Caithness, all of Sutherland, most of Ross-shire, the Black Isle, Inverness - and extending east through Moray and out to the north-eastern tip of Aberdeenshire.

Shetland, Orkney, Lewis and Harris are also included in the alert zone, as too is the northern part of the Trotternish ridge on Skye.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "During Sunday, showers will turn increasingly wintry through the day with hail, sleet and some snow.

"Little snow is likely to settle at low levels by day, but through the evening and overnight, one to three centimetres may accumulate in some places, whilst five to 10 cm is possible on high ground above 300 metres by Monday morning.

"Meanwhile, as temperatures fall overnight, ice is likely to form on untreated surfaces."

A separate warning has also been issued for Monday and Tuesday in the central belt, Southern Uplands, borders and south into northern England.
