THE NAMES of young footballers who will represent Forres in Germany this summer have been revealed.
The Forres Area Soccer Sevens board were overwhelmed by the number of players who put their names forward to visit Forres’ twin town Vienenburg, and found narrowing the list of applicants very difficult.
Club chairman Shaun Moat said: “It was fantastic that there was such enthusiasm and over 30 kids put their names forward.
“It took a long time to decide who the final 16 were going to be – it was no easy task but we got there in the end.”
Parents had been asked to fill out application forms with their children stating why they felt they should go.
The chosen players, aged between 7 and 13-years-old, and 16 adults including parents, will visit Vienenburg for a seven day trip starting on July 31. They are expected to stay in a local hall, similar to the arrangements two years ago when visitors from German boy’s club JSG Harly were accommodated at the Soccer Sevens pavilion at Grant Park. They youngsters will play matches against JSG Harly and visit the local school, attending classes and learning about German culture.
Soccer Sevens are fundraising for the trip which is expected to cost around £8,000. More than £1000 has already been raised via a bingo night at Royal British Legion (Scotland) Forres. Another bingo night, a sponsored walk and wax are also planned.
“We are encouraging the youngsters who are going and their families to help,” said Shaun. “We’ve been inundated with ideas including a car boot sale and a car wash.”
The club has also started team-bonding and preparation sessions for the tour group.
“Everyone will feel comfortable when the trip finally comes round,” said Shaun. “Parents are offering to host German food nights and to teach basic German.
“The trip is going to be fantastic – we are going by coach to give the kids the true football experience like the teams they see arriving at football stadiums around Europe!”
The young people going to Germany are: (Super 5s) James Wilson, Lewis Smith, Connor Finlayson, Olivia Roberts, Ethan Lynch, Kai Prophet and Ben Ross, (Soccer Sevens) Donald Johnstone, Tommy Foster, Max Theman, Ashton Bayliss, Neo Hatch, Louise Goodall, Nico Giscombe, Jake Farquhar and Finlay Wallace.
Neo’s mum, Heather Hatch, is delighted he is taking part in the experience.
She said: “Neo was so excited when he heard the news that he started jumping up and down!
“He met the players who came across from Germany last year and said then he would love to go over.
“Neo is studying German after the summer when he moves to Forres Academy so this is a great educational opportunity for him.”
