THE welfare football season is underway in Moray.

Last Thursday saw the Forres and Nairn league kick off with matches in the Calum Riddell Memorial Trophy.

Nairn's Uncle Bobs defeated Forres' Mosset Tavern 4-1 in one of three rreliminary ties.

Lossiemouth Welfare had a 3-0 win away to Elgin Caledonian in a game marred by a serious knee injury to Lossie's Thomas Mustoe.

The Kinloss Sappers marked their return to the FNWFA by ruining the Red Lion's own comeback with a 1-0 win at Kinloss.

Kinloss then beat Nairn United 7-1 to book a semi-final trip this Friday to league champs Elgin Thistle, who beat Bobs 2-1.

Lossie's bid was ended by a 7-1 loss to Nairn's Westerlea, who now meet Carlton (Forres) after their 3-1 victory against FC Elgin.

In the Moray league, champions Hopeman began their defence with a 2-0 win at home to Elgin Athletic.

Aberlour edged out Cullen 1-0 while the highest scorers were Fochabers, 12-1 winners against Rothes A, and Buckie United who beat new boys Lhanbryde 9-0.

Burghead United won 8-2 against Tomintoul, Bishopmill Rovers edged out Macduff 2-0 and Banff Rovers were 3-0 winners at Portsoy.
