GIRLGUIDING Moray has been recognised for a gigantic beach clean up operation that saw 50 miles of sand cleaned by hundreds of youngsters.
The group was named as the winner of the Green Community Venture, sponsored by Vatenfall, at the Moray and Banffshire Heroes Awards on Thursday, April 25.
The beach clean-up was inspired by King Charles’ Big Help Out initiative and saw more than 500 Girlguiding members tackle litter along the Moray coastline. Youngsters and leaders from 30 units joined forces for the event.
Girlguiding Moray county commissioner, Louise Winder, challenged all units in the county to clean as much of the coast between Findhorn and Cullen as they could over summer.
She said: “When the King announced the Big Help Out I thought it would be a good idea to get involved.
"I suggested to our committee that we clean the 50 miles of the Moray coastline.
"They all thought it was a good idea. The girls love getting out and about and they really took to it.
"The Hopeman Brownies cleaned the beach within an inch of its life every time the tide went out and came back in. They found some amazing things and loved it.”
"We are already gearing up for another beach clean this summer.”
Louise, from Forres, added: "I'm absolutely delighted that the efforts of all the leaders and young members have been recognised by everyone who voted for us.
"Moray Waste Busters (award runner-up) is a brilliant charity, but I am delighted all the young people who spent hours cleaning the beach and litter-picking round their community have been recognised for all their hard work.
"Everybody in Girlguiding Moray will be thrilled that we have won."
