GÜTEN Tag from Vienenburg. I am currently visiting our twin town in Germany as part of a visit celebrating the 25th anniversary of the twinning link between our two towns.

I am here as part of a group of 26. Each visitor, or couple, is being hosted by a German family, and Pearl and myself are being hosted by Uwe and Sabine Bartel. Uwe is the Fire Chief in Vienenburg, and with his wife visited Forres in June, 2008. Both the Twinning Association and the Town Administration (Council) have laid on a varied and interesting programme of events, ranging from formal gatherings to outdoor events, and including a traditional beer festival. At the beer festival we were entertained, not only by an excellent, traditional band, but by two members of our group, Peem Stevenson and Arlene Wilson. Old friendships were rekindled and new ones begun. As part of our party, we also have Fiona and Heather, two pupils from Forres Academy. In the past, Forres Academy has had a very active link with their opposite number in Vienenburg. Over the years, this link has weakened, and it is hoped that the visit from the two girls will be the first step to reinstating regular pupil exchanges. Fiona and Heather, as well as having a very good time, are acting as first class ambassadors for their school and for Forres. Twinning is not only about having a good time but is about education, culture and fostering relations between our two towns. As well as a better understanding of our twin town, there are also financial spin-offs. Because of the twinning links throughout Moray, many people visit Moray each year, not only as part of organised twinning visits, but as individuals. |
