MORAY Council's 2009 Holiday Sports Development programme is the biggest yet so far, with young people's activities from organisations around Moray being included in this year's special brochure.

As well as activities from Moray Council's sports development team, it includes information on activities from a number of other groups in the area. Included are Moray Active Schools, Ross County and Aberdeen Football Clubs, North Region Girls' Football League, Outfit Moray, Sansum Black Belt Academy, New Wave Surf School, Kwik Cricket festivals, mountain biking and racing events and the Country and Coast programme.

A council spokesman said that parents were bombarded with leaflets from lots of different organisations with activities on offer during the holidays to keep children occupied.

He said by pulling all the activities into one booklet, it makes life easier for parents and those looking after children to find a range of activities during the school break, with the Country and Coast events also open to whole families.

Moray Council's sports development dept have also joined forces with the Asda Sporting Chance Campaign so children can attend one day of a week-long camp free of charge, as long as they are in possession of an Asda voucher.

For further details on sessions visit the website www.asda-sportingchance.co.uk or look in the holiday brochure.

If a child attends a week-long camp organised and delivered by the sports development department, they can attend another week-long camp for half-price. The department is also offering discounts on multiple bookings from within the same family.

"These are great financial incentives for signing up children into the activity programme," said the council spokesman.

"We promise they will thoroughly enjoy themselves participating in the sessions."

A new payment system has also been introduced for the summer holiday sports development programme this year. Parents registering their child or children for sessions will only be required to submit an application form initially, and no payment will be requested until after the activity has been done.

Activities for the Forres area will include fun games, junior Highland games, club golf, ball games, mini olympics, basketball, rugby and mixed sports.

Tennis camps, trampolining, club golf, orienteering, fun and games, badminton, basketball, rugby, wheelchair basketball and volleyball will be on offer in Elgin, and the Lossiemouth and Speymouth areas will include hockey, mixed games, mini activities, fun games, basketball, rugby, mini olympics, tennis and ball games. Racquet and ball games, mini olympics, club golf, dance and run 4 fun sessions will be on offer in the Keith area. Activities in the Buckie area include wheelchair basketball, mixed sports, rugby, hockey, cricket, fun games, tennis, dance, club golf, run 4 fun and mini olympics. Finally, the Speyside area will include badminton, rugby, mixed sports, tennis, basketball and cricket.

The Street Football pitch will also be travelling around Moray during the six-week break, offering the opportunity to play street basketball and street rugby. It will be at Pilmuir Primary School during the last week of the school holidays, from August 10 between 7pm and 9pm.

The Country and Coast programme has been pulled together by assistance from the Forestry Commission, the Speyside Way Ranger Service, the Moray Coast Ranger Service and the WDCS Wildlife Centre. There is a vast array of activities on offer free of charge in relation to this programme for young and old alike. Some of the activities include cycle rides, beach-cleaning, dog walks, pond-dipping, nature walks and kite-flying.
