Green fires up Forres form
Published: 26 March, 2008
A HAT-TRICK from giant striker Ryan Green saw Forres Mechanics close the gap on seventh placed Huntly, last Wednesday night as they returned from Lochaber with the full points and seven goals after demolishing bottom dogs Fort William. The former Elgin, Buckie and Nairn player now sits on 15 goals for the season, fellow strikers Charlie Brown and Kevin Duguid weighing in with a goal each and two own goals rounding it off. Unfortunately, the win could not be followed up on Saturday due to Forres being the odd team out in the 15-team league with a free date. It is making for a stop-start season as experienced defender Graeme Grant points out. He said: "It's been like this all season with postponements and other reasons but we're on a good run now and looking forward to this weekend's home game against Wick Academy. We put six goals in against them earlier on this season and although they've lost heavily to Cove and Buckie in the past fortnight, by all accounts they are playing quite well. Who knows if we'll face a backlash." Grant is happy to see the goals being knocked in and pays tribute to Green who has been very unlucky not to be included in an HFL Select team which played Ross County in a trial match at Buckie last night (Tuesday) with a view to representing Scotland in the Home Nations Tournament. "Ryan has scored a lot of goals and is on fire, Charlie is coming back too, and what a difference it makes to him when he is in full training." All over the park, the form has been good and recognition of certain players' efforts has seen them nominated for the Player Clubman of the Year Awards for the end of the season. As well as Green, ever-consistent midfielder Neil Whyte and goalkeeper Stuart Knight are the Can-Cans players put forward to be voted on by their fellow Highland League players. "These boys have done really well for us but they're not the only ones. There are quite a few very decent players who have arrived here," said Grant. "Gary Youngson is the latest to settle in and that is a big change to when Steve Paterson left, where we were filling voids for a while. If we get off to a good start next season with the squad we have, I'd expect us to do well." Meanwhile, Grant and his fellow squad players have been on a weekend fact-finding mission or team bonding as it's called these days. With no Highland League game, they travelled the seven-hour journey by mini bus to attend the Premiership game in which Newcastle United beat Fulham at St James' Park. "It was a change from our normal routine and good to take in a Premiership game to see how it all works. There was a good crowd there with the Toon fans getting well behind Kevin Keegan as they try to climb the table. We saw no signs of unrest, no rumblings, and I'd guess he'll sign up a few new players over the summer to turn things around." |
