Glenmorangie Distillery

Glenmorangie SignetThe Glenmorangie Distillery was founded in 1843 in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, in the Royal Burgh of Tain. Our company has proudly carved a reputation as pioneers, uniting traditional techniques with innovative new processes.

The venture may have started small, its location remote, but our founder, William Matheson, had an extraordinary vision. By using the tallest stills in Scotland, he was laying the foundations of what would become one of the most famous single malt Scotch whiskies in the world.

A visit to our distillery is rather special with our unique, cathedral-like still house at its heart. Simple raw ingredients are transformed into a spirit of rare finesse and subtlety in a meticulous and ingenious fashion. Our famous 12 majestic stills fill the cavernous space, with their long, elegant copper necks. As the tallest stills in Scotland, they are to the same specification as the second-hand ex-gin stills our pioneering founder purchased in 1843.

Visitors can also meet the legendary "Men of Tain", our skilled craftsmen who ensure that Glenmorangie is made in the same unhurried and uncompromising way it has been throughout its long and distinguished history. Visitors will be enlightened with the intricacies of our craft, an insight only enhanced by a tasting of a wee dram of our "Unnecessarily Well Made" single malt whiskies.

And a visit to our distillery would not be complete without adding a little local cultural knowledge. Our exquisite Glenmorangie logo was adopted by our distillers from the remarkable engravings on an eighth-century Pictish Stone, the Hilton of Cadboll, that was carved near the distillery. An ancient civilisation, the Picts ruled northern Scotland and intricately carved the stone depicting a people of pride, strength and confidence. It seems only appropriate that we should be inspired by such a feat to represent the innovation and the multi-layered complexity of our whisky's refined quality.
