Glasstorm is a unique and contemporary fine art glass studio nestled in the Highland town of Tain.
It was established in 2005 by the creative duo Brodie Nairn and Nichola Burns. The couple met while studying at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen, where they both also fell in love with the medium of glass. They went on to study at the International Glass Centre in England and, after graduating, took up apprenticeships with some of the leading contemporary glass artists in Europe and the US.
Nicky and Brodie firmly established themselves as independent glass artists while living and working in Europe. They have two very different styles of work: Brodie with his minimal sensuous forms and Nicky with her energetic and exuberant sculptural works.
Together they strike the perfect balance, creating Glasstorm's elegant, handmade glass range. All unique or limited-edition works are freeblown without the use of moulds, and designed and made in the Glasstorm studio. Working alongside Brodie and Nicky is a small but highly motivated and skilled team taking pride in everything they produce. The studio's aim is to create works to the very highest quality and the company motto is to "Strive for Elegance and Excellence" in everything it does.
Glasstorm is an award-winning studio, undertaking bespoke commissions, one-off fine art pieces and public art commissions. It has also made works for big-name national companies, trophies for numerous award ceremonies and prop and set decoration for television and film.
The studio has special demonstration days to watch the glassblowers at work and also runs weekend day courses for people to experience glassblowing for themselves and take home what they make. All information about this is on the Glasstorm website, along with photographs of the beautiful work they create.
