The Forres A pool team travelled to Pettycur Bay, Kinghorn, Fife to take part in the Scottish Pool Association’s (SPA) ‘Super 11s’ event from February 24-26.
With high hopes, the team were edged out 6-5 in their first game by eventual semi-finalists Levenmouth D, and again came a cropper 8-3 against Arbroath C on the Friday night.
Forres A took a long time to get used to the fast running conditions – there are no competition-standard tables in Moray to practice on, which put them at a significant disadvantage compared to other teams.
On the Saturday afternoon, the team clicked into gear, defeating the Ladies A team 6-5 and running a strong Glasgow C team close at 7-4.
The results meant Forres A needed a 7-4 win in their final game against Clydebank B to qualify for the last 16.
As with the other matches, Forres A were victims of bad run and lack of practice on competition-standard tables.
Forres A ran out 6-5 winners in the end and missed out on the latter stages by one solitary frame.
Fortunately, the consolation was they were not relegated from the division and will get to try again next year.
No matter the outcome, the Super 11s, including the tables, live streaming and scoring system, was a great experience for Forres A.
The team are now looking for a venue in the area to house a competition-standard table. There are plans for 11/15-man challenge matches with other northern leagues – venues will host monthly matches.
Other plans include a singles league with all matches played in the venue.
If you can provide a suitable venue for a competition-standard table, contact Adam Macleod on firstname.lastname@example.org.
