Local food has benefits for the community

At a time when even government policy advisers are advocating local food markets as integral to the development of rural town highstreets it is sad to note the current closure of forres market. Whilst there were obvious problems specific to the forres effort it is also true that anyone attempting to offer local food alternatives to the out of town supermarket  industry is in for a challenging time. Logistical issues such as pricing, convenience, location, parking and opening times being just a selection of the hurdles to overcome if you are to survive.

However research from respected organisations such as the New Economic Foundation have long shown the benefits that sustainable local food brings to the health, culture and economy of local communities. The success of local food markets throughout the UK show it can be done and we hope that transition Town Forres and the relevant local government offices work together with local producers  to create a longterm solution. As a founding  stallholder at the market  we would thank everyone who worked so hard to get the project started and all our customers, staff and friends who supported our popular stall.
